2025 NFL free agency updates: Vikings show patience with Aaron Rodgers, but all signs point to J.J. McCarthy at QB1

It doesn’t sound like the Minnesota Vikings are holding their breath on Aaron Rodgers, who is still contemplating his decision amid NFL free agency.

Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah sounds all but all-in on J.J. McCarthy as the starter for the 2025 season. Welp, so much for Rodgers having a starting job waiting for him in Minneapolis if he picked the Vikings over the Pittsburgh Steelers and retirement.

Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson reported that compensatory draft picks could be in play in why the Vikings haven’t added a veteran backup to their lineup yet. Per Robinson:

That deadline traditionally comes in May. Maybe that player will be Rodgers, once he doesn’t count against a future comp pick for the franchise. Maybe it will be one of several veterans who are still on the market and can provide the ability to support McCarthy and start some games in a pinch.

Meanwhile, in New York, the Giants’ Russell Wilson met the media Wednesday and said he expected to be the starter this coming season. When asked about having to play second fiddle in the waiting game behind Rodgers, Russ gave a Russ-like answer.

“Aaron Rodgers is a tremendous football player. He has done some amazing things in this league. I’ve been fortunate to be able to do some great things too, and really what I’m focused on is right now and what we can do here. That’s been my focus since I’ve signed and everything else.

“And also too, along the way, is finding a place that continues to believe in you.”

As for the rest of the league, most of Yahoo Sports Senior NFL Writer Frank Schwab’s top 25 available free agents, and even more throughout his positional rankings, are already off the board. And don’t forget: The NFL Draft also isn’t far off. Cam Ward is going first in our latest mock draft, and Yahoo Sports draft expert Nate Tice has written profiles on Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, while fellow draft expert Charles McDonald wrote on Texas A&M edge Shemar Stewart last week.
