5 Things We Learned From Week 3 At The 2025 College Baseball Series

Make it 10 straight for the Auburn Tigers after an impressive sweep through the third weekend of the 2025 College Baseball Series.

Auburn arrived at Globe Life Field nationally ranked and on a seven-game winning streak, so the Tigers’ performance at the home of the Texas Rangers didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. Still, in an outstanding weekend that included a thrilling, 8-7 win over top 10-ranked Oregon, Auburn used the College Baseball Series to put the SEC — and the nation — on notice.

This and more developments from Arlington, Texas, are the five takeaways from College Baseball Series Weekend Three.

Auburn Can (and Will) Contend for the SEC

Despite opening the 2025 season with Top 25 billing, Auburn was tabbed to finish in the lower half of the stacked Southeastern Conference. Through the first three weeks of the campaign, the Tigers have been as good as any team in college baseball, including the preseason favorites of their home conference. The College Baseball Series marked the high point of that impressive start.

Getting things started with a 13-0 romp of Ohio State, which included an eight-run second inning and multiple-hit performances from four Tigers, Auburn’s bats were red hot. No batter was hotter than that of Chase Fralick, who bookended the weekend with three-hit games.

He drove in a pair of runs against both Ohio State and Baylor, with his run-scoring singles on Sunday in the first and fifth contributing to a pivotal stretch of seven unanswered Tigers runs.

Fralick leaves the Lone Star sporting a team-leading .474 batting average — and he is one of seven Tigers to have already connected for at least 11 knocks this season.

Cade Belyeu’s Incredible Season Continues

Among the Auburn batters who are delivering in a big way to start is Cade Belyeu, whose sensational start includes an emotional home run against Holy Cross after the passing of his mother.

Belyeu homered for the first time since that touching tribute with a round-tripper in the 7-4 win over Baylor. The eighth-inning bop put away the College Baseball Series sweep, and added a fitting punctuation mark to the elite outfielder’s weekend.

Belyeu scored against Oregon State on a breathtaking double-steal with Ike Irish, swiping home plate during the fire drill.

There’s a ton of season to be played, but in the pure highlight department, Cade Belyeu is an easy front-runner for All-America.

Jacob Kreig Brings The Clout

Coming into 2025, Oregon State returned one of the nation’s most fearsome home-run hitters in Gavin Turley. And Turley has indeed given pitchers reason to think twice about leaving anything over the plate, including at the College Baseball Series where he smashed homers against both Auburn and Ohio State.

However, emerging as a powerful counter-punch along with Turley in the Oregon State batting order is Jacob Kreig. Kreig was no slouch at the dish in 2024 with nine home runs, but he’s already more than halfway to blowing past that number in 2025, adding Nos. 4 and 5 at Globe Life Field.

Kreig homered against Auburn and he broke a 2-2 tie with one against Baylor. The 4-3 win over Baylor also saw Kreig drive in Tyce Peterson on a single.

If Kreig can continue on the early-season pace he’s established, he’ll play a vital role in Oregon State’s pursuit of the College World Series.

Keep An Eye on Baylor in the Big 12

Baylor made a statement at the College Baseball Series despite going 1-2. The Bears embarked on 2025 with no shortage of confidence despite being picked to finish in the lower tier of the preseason Big 12 poll, and the pillars of that confidence are delivering early into the season.

Wesley Jordan and Enzo Apodaca, two of Baylor’s three veteran outfielders, had impressive moments at Globe Life Field. Jordan homered against Oregon State, while Apodaca homered and drove in three runs against Auburn.

Baylor is also getting impressive contributions from Tyriq Kemp both at the plate and in the field. Kemp is batting .441 after the College Baseball Series, and his fielding has been perfect since the season opener. He turned a pair of double plays against Auburn.

Justin Haire’s Project at Ohio State is Long-Term

Immediate results have eluded Ohio State in the opening weeks of first-year Buckeyes coach Justin Haire’s tenure. Ohio State’s faced an absolute meat-grinder in the initial stretch of 2025, and the Buckeyes are 1-8 after going 0-3 at the College Baseball Series.

The former Campbell coach Haire’s team isn’t without promise, though. Losses to Coastal Carolina, Alabama, and both Baylor and Oregon State at Globe Life Field were by two runs each. The Buckeyes have been able to produce runs in each of those contests against likely NCAA Tournament teams, and Oakland University transfer Reggie Bussey has been outstanding through the early going.

As a junior, Bussey is the kind of player who could be a cornerstone for Ohio State’s build beyond 2025. Bussey had hits against both Baylor and Oregon State, and drew walks in both contests. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Chase Herrell has shown some potential on the mound with nine strikeouts in the extra innings loss to Coastal, and four batters fanned in his start at the College Baseball Series vs. Oregon State.
