Adding on a developing story, Adam Silver opened up about the discussions between the NBA and FIBA.
To follow up on a recent update by Andreas Zagklis, the secretary general of FIBA, the NBA commissioner also confirmed talks between North American league officials and the International Basketball Federation about a potential NBA expansion to Europe.
“We’re not ready to make any public announcements. We haven’t made any internal decisions yet, but I do think there continues to be an enormous opportunity to take basketball to another level in Europe,” he told reporters before the 2024 Emirates NBA Cup Final in Las Vegas on Tuesday, “I think the quality of the basketball in Europe has been fantastic. Many of our top players, of course, are from Europe, but we think there is more of a commercial and fan opportunity to create something special in Europe.”
The exact plan remains unclear. However, recent reactions hint at more concrete developments within the next few weeks.
The 2025 NBA Paris Games, presented by Tissot, featuring the San Antonio Spurs and French star Victor Wembanyama taking on the Indiana Pacers on January 23 and 25, seem like a suitable platform to extend discussions and possibly become ready for a reveal of a specific project.
The upcoming clashes between the Spurs and the Pacers mark the first occasion with two regular-season fixtures in the capital of France. Paris previously hosted one single game of the Regular Season in 2020, 2023, and 2024.
