The Toronto Blue Jays tried to land Juan Soto to pair with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. However, they were unable to do so and now will turn their focus to trying to extend Guerrero.
The Blue Jays will do everything in their power to keep their star player in Toronto. However, during an appearance on Abriendo Sports, Guerrero noted that the two sides are not close in terms of contract offers. MLB Insider Héctor Gómez translated his comments on X.
“What they offered me is not even close to what I’m looking for,” Guerrero said.
Exact figures have not come out, but is is likely that Guerrero is seeking a contract closer to that of other superstars in the league. Juan Soto’s $765 million deal is likely not the standard, but Guerrero deserves to be paid like one of the games best, because he is.
Guerreo is a four-time All-Star, Gold Glover and a two-time Silver Slugger. Last season he slahsed .323/.396/.544. He will be a free agent following the 2025 season. If he hits the open market there is no guarantee the Blue Jays will have a chance to sign him. The organization has not proven the ability to compete year in and year out which could ultimately drive Guerrero away.
The Blue Jays will not be able to go cheap if they want Guerrero around long term. Their best chance of keeping him in Toronto is offering him a lucrative extension so that first base needy teams, like the New York Yankees, don’t get a chance to steal him away.
