Lane Kiffin endorsed Nick Saban to be the commissioner of college football.
There is no college football commissioner, or NCAA commissioner at this point, but analysts such as Kirk Herbstreit, Joel Klatt and more have called for such a position to be filled. That especially rings true as NIL, the transfer portal and the current topic of interest — the future of how teams will qualify for the College Football Playoff continue to be popularly debated.
A user by the name of Ken Cornia on X posed a long-formed question about topics ranging from scheduling discrepancies, to bowl scheduling and whether or not the College Football Playoff committee needs to review its seeding qualifications.
At the end of his post, he asked people to pick between Saban, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, longtime college football head coach Mack Brown, or Oliver Luck, the first commissioner of the XFL and current executive director of the United Athletic Conference.
Kiffin, who has been outspoken about many of these topics in the past, believes his former boss would be perfect for the job.
Anyone who has been on X recently knows that Kiffin has taken exception to the CFP and its decision to leave SEC teams out of the playoff. He drew some attention for his comments throughout the first round of the College Football Playoff, particularly because they produced lopsided outcomes.
One of Kiffin’s biggest gripes of the CFP was how Ole Miss was one of a slew of three-loss SEC teams to miss out on the field while SMU and Indiana — teams who lost by multiple scores in the first round — made the 12-team bracket.
A major argument of Kiffin’s came through strength of schedule. The Rebels’ schedule ranks No. 33 in the country as of Saturday afternoon, according to ESPN’s FPI, which is just behind Indiana. Before the Notre Dame game, though, the Hoosiers had the No. 67-ranked schedule.
Whether having Nick Saban in a national commissioner role will solve all of these issues the college football faces remains to be seen, but either way he has Kiffin’s vote.
