NC State Newsstand: Women’s basketball slips in AP Top 25

Despite earning a 14-point win over James Madison last week, NC State women’s basketball fell one spot in the newest edition of the Associated Press Top 25.

The Wolfpack (9-3, 1-0 ACC) checked in at No. 22 with 147 total points as one of six ACC teams inside the rankings this week. Notre Dame remained at No. 3, while Georgia Tech moved up four spots to No. 13. Duke, meanwhile, dropped five spots to No. 14, North Carolina rose two to No. 17 and Cal jumped up four spots to No. 21.

Senior guard Aziaha James, who scored 21 points against the Dukes, leads the Wolfpack with 16.6 points, while fellow classmate Saniya Rivers is averaging 11.2 points and paces NC State with 6.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks a game. Sophomore Zoe Brooks, meanwhile, is averaging 12.0 points with a team-best 2.9 assists for the Pack.

NC State returns to action against Clemson inside Reynolds Coliseum on Dec. 29, kicking off the heart of the Wolfpack’s conference schedule. The Pack’s next ranked opponent is Cal, which it is set to clash with on Jan. 9 in Berkeley.

Quote of the day

NC State senior point guard Michael O’Connell broke out of a slump on remaining who he is on the basketball court every time he played.

“The biggest thing for me is, no matter what happens in the past, just to stay consistent and get better every game,” O’Connell said. “For me, just going out there and doing whatever I can to help the team win is great. … Making sure I’m taking care of the ball is big, obviously. It’s one of my biggest roles while I’m on the floor for this team. It’s good to see I’m getting back to it.”
