Ex-Yankees pitcher signs in NL, immediately becoming top late-inning option

The Pirates and Caleb Ferguson are in agreement on a one-year deal, according to Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The left-handed pitcher split the 2024 season between the Yankees and Astros.

The Pirates lost Aroldis Chapman, Jalen Beeks and Ryan Borucki to free agency at the completion of the 2024 season. Now, the only left-handed reliever on the roster is Joey Wentz, who was claimed off waivers in September and posted a 4.68 ERA in 2024. Ferguson will enter as the top lefty-reliever in the Pittsburgh bullpen.

Ferguson, 28, features four pitches, introducing a slurve and a sinker this season. In 62 appearances last season, he posted a 4.64 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings. His season can be broken down into two parts since he played with two teams.

With the Yankees, he posted a 5.13 ERA in 42 appearances. After he was traded to the Astros at the trade deadline, he settled into a more reliable option, posting a 3.86 ERA in 20 appearances.
