Former Parkway star Mikaylah Williams scored 16 points to help the No. 6 LSU Tigers edge No. 16 Tennessee 89-87 Thursday night in Knoxville, Tenn.
With the score tied at 86, Kailyn Gilbert drive into the lane, went up and sank a left-handed shot with 1 second left to give the Tigers the victory.
LSU improved to 18-0 overall and 3-0 in the SEC. Tennessee dropped to 13-2 and 1-2.
The Tigers led by as many as six points in the fourth quarter. But the Lady Vols rallied and took an 84-82 lead with 2:17 left.
A three-point play by Flau’jae Johnson gave LSU and 85-84 lead with 2:97 left.
Tennessee had two possessions to take the lead but missed a 3-pointer, a shot inside and a tip-in. Williams scored a fast-break layup off a pass from Johnson with 50 seconds left.
Gilbert made a steal but the Lady Vols returned the favor and Jewel Spear nailed a 3-pointer to tie it at with 32 seconds left.
Johnson missed a jumper but teammate Aneesah Morrow grabbed the rebound with 21 seconds left. That set the stage for Gilbert’s gamewinner.
Williams was 7-of-11 from the field. She hit the Tigers’ only 3-pointer.
LSU was 1-of-8 from behind the arc. Tennessee put up 31 and made 11.
Morrow led the Tigers with 23 points and 21 rebounds. Gilbert had 22 points. Johnson had 20 points and eight rebounds.
Spear led the Lady Vols with 25 points. She was 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Te’a Cooper, who was 10-of-23 from the field, had 24.
LSU led 26-17 after the first quarter. The Tigers went up 36-19 on a layup by Morrow with 7:02 left in the half. The Lady Vols rallied and cut the lead to 46-39 at the half.
Morrow had 19 points in the half, including 13 in the second quarter.
Tennessee got within two late in the third but Gilbert converted a three-point play to give the Tigers a 67-62 lead going into the fourth.
