It’s been more than 48 hours since Tuesday morning’s call to the Los Angeles Fire Department that first reported the Palisades fire. 21-year-old boot salesman, Nic Libonati had a regular start to the morning on the fateful day when he first noticed the fire that has now gobbled up almost 36K acres of land mass of the City. The NBA has already felt the heat of the catastrophic event that painted LA red, resembling a hellish silhouette. Lakers HC, JJ Redick, the Warriors’ Steve Kerr, and more were impacted by the raging flames and Adam Silver had to intervene with a fixture already postponed. But now it seems, he has a lot to ponder upon in this state of chaos.
Adam Silver’s league announced on Thursday the postponement of the Lakers vs Hornets game at the Crypto.com arena. “The National Basketball Association game scheduled for tonight between the Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena has been postponed due to the ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles area. The date for the rescheduled game will be announced at a later time,” the PR announcement read. Now concerns might also grow for the Clippers vs Hornets Saturday night game at the Intuit dome.
The live map of the LA Wildfires from California’s emergency response website shows two adjacent fires in the $2 billion stadium’s close proximity. West 120th Street is a spot that is just 2.4 miles away and the other is West Florence Avenue, 3 miles from the grand stadium. The fire approaching the Clippers’ arena poses a significant risk to the Clippers’ billionaire owner, Steve Ballmer’s newly inaugurated property.

It was just months ago, that Ballmer had invested $2 billion to build the Dome. This season was the first time the Clippers could step out of the shadow of the Lakers and settle on their own home court. In a situation like this, Adam Silver may have to take the drastic step of postponing the said game to ensure the safety of the fans and the Inglewood neighborhood.

Adam Silver and Co. need to come up with an immediate solution in the wake of the LA Wildfires
According to multiple reports, the estimated damages are upwards of $57 billion, making it the 7th most expensive natural disaster in US history. With almost 200,000 people on evacuation notice, concerns are mounting over the Lakers’ back-to-back fixtures in Los Angeles. Precisely seven matchups are at the Crypto.com Arena, while the Clippers have three straight games over the next week at the Inglewood Dome. With NBA ratings dropping this season, Adam Silver might not be inclined toward postponing all of them.
However, as the city battles for its safety and survival, the league will need to find a solution to navigate these challenges. The NFL has already made its move by shifting the Rams vs Vikings game to Arizona. Inglewood residents have received an evacuation alert and the NBA might have to follow suit soon.

While the NFL playoffs wildcard game was moved due to its urgent nature, a postponement seems to be a logical decision Adam Silver might make. Although there is no confirmation regarding the decision at the time of writing, more updates will be provided as it comes.
