5 Transfer Portal Landing Spots for Tyrece Mills Include Clemson Tigers, Rutgers Scarlet Knights

After his senior season with the Penn State Nittany Lions, safety Tyrece Mills entered his name in the transfer portal on Jan. 14.

Mills was a junior college product that played in 18 games with the Nittany Lions over the last two seasons. He was a key part of Penn State’s playoff run this year, grabbing the game-sealing interception against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. With one year of eligibility remaining, where could the grad transfer wind up?

Where Will Tyrece Mills Transfer?

Clemson Tigers

Dabo Swinney has just recently begun to dip his toes into the transfer portal, after previously refusing to touch it. This year the Clemson Tigers have already brought in three transfers, so it wouldn’t be insane to suggest that they could be looking for more.

Clemson’s safety depth has depleted with both seniors graduating and some younger guys transferring out. Mill’s former defensive coordinator, Tom Allen, just left Penn State to take the same job at Clemson. It would make sense for Mills to want to follow his old coach down south.

Syracuse Orange

The Syracuse Orange has faced a lot of departures from the secondary this offseason and needs help on the back end of the defense. Head coach Fran Brown is an elite recruiter and was a DBs coach in his time with the Georgia Bulldogs, so he should be valuing Tyrece Mills’ skillset fairly highly.

Mills is originally from Philadelphia, which is not too far from Syracuse. If he is looking to transfer somewhere somewhat close to home, Syracuse should be at the top of his list.

Indiana Hoosiers

It is well known that Curt Cignetti loves to use the transfer portal to add talent to his roster, and this is a golden opportunity to add some veteran play to his secondary with the Indiana Hoosiers.

So far this cycle, Indiana lost two safeties in the portal and brought in two safeties. If Cignetti is looking to ensure he’ll have high-quality play in his secondary next season, it would be a wise move to add Mills.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights

The Rutgers Knights saw three outgoing safeties in the portal this offseason and also need to add help to their secondary badly. With the opportunity to steal a player from a conference rival, I expect Greg Schiano to make a push at Mills.

Being from Philadelphia, the move to Rutgers would enable Mills to be closer to home.

North Carolina Tar Heels

Bill Belichick has made it known that he wants to attack the transfer portal since arriving at UNC. I think a talented grad transfer fits the mold well for what Belichick is trying to get — Someone who can be a leader, as well as be coachable.

For Mills, playing under Belichick would give him an opportunity to develop himself into an NFL talent during his final year of school.
