Smithsburg native Jim Schlossnagle recently was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md.
Schlossnagle, who is preparing for his first season with the University of Texas Longhorns, has accumulated a 946-455 record (.675) in 23 seasons as a college baseball head coach, with his teams making seven appearances in the College World Series.
Last June, in his third season at Texas A&M, he and the Aggies fell one win short of the national title, losing to Tennessee in the best-of-3 finals, 2-1.
Less than 24 hours later, Schlossnagle, a 1988 Smithsburg High graduate, was named the new head coach of the Longhorns.
“What a home run hire,” said Jay Hartzell, the University of Texas president, in announcing the hiring. “Coach Schlossnagle is the best in the business, his long list of accomplishments is incredible, and his track record of building great programs is well-documented. We are the premier baseball program in the country with legendary coaches, our six national championships and record 38 College World Series appearances, so it’s certainly fitting that we hired a coach of his caliber to lead us.”

He twice was named the national coach of the year (2010, 2016), and in 2013, he was inducted into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame.
