Kenny Fenelon, Brailyn Antunez top the Brewers’ impressive international free-agent class

The Milwaukee Brewers brought in another intriguing international signing class Wednesday, following in step with a trend of significant strides taken by the organization recently in this area.

For the longest time, the Brewers’ big-league club got minimal production from its international efforts, with Orlando Arcia and Wily Peralta being the cream of the crop of Milwaukee’s signings out of Latin American countries.

That has changed dramatically in recent years, beginning with the 2021 class that landed the Brewers Jackson Chourio and Jeferson Quero from Venezuela. Last year, the Brewers hit a splash with the signing of Jesus Made, considered to be one of baseball’s best prospects at only 17 years old. With others including Abner Uribe, Yophery Rodriguez, Luis Lara and Luis Pena in recent years, the Brewers have become one of the top clubs in terms of scouting and signing players from Latin America.

Here’s a look at the highlights from Milwaukee’s 2025 class.

16 year old outfielder Kenny Fenelon is the Milwaukee Brewers' expected top bonus recipient from the 2025 international signing class. He is in an agreement to sign with the club for $1.3 million on January 15.

Kenny Fenelon is a power machine

The top bonus in the Brewers’ class is going to Kenny Fenelon, a 17-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic signing for $1.3 million, sources told the Journal Sentinel.

Fenelon’s greatest strength is his power, generated from a strong lower half and above-average bat speed for his age. Fenelon has recorded exit velocities up to 105 mph in games, an impressive number for a player his age.

Defensively, Fenelon is most likely to move to a corner outfield position, likely right field due to his strong arm.

The arrow is up on Brailyn Antunez

Venezuelan outfielder Brailyn Antunez is one of the Milwaukee Brewers' top players in their 2025 international signing class.

Strong work by the Brewers in Venezuela yet again helped land them outfielder Brailyn Antunez. Milwaukee was in early on Antunez, which helped it sign the athletic, rangy centerfielder for $1 million before he fully burst onto the radars of other teams.

There are similarities not only in the signing story of Antunez to Jackson Chourio, who also hails from Maracaibo, Venezuela, and reached a deal early in the process with the Brewers before his name started to blow up, but also with the skills. While it’s a lofty comparison that Antunez is still a ways away from, there are parallels between the two in terms of their athleticism and swings.

Antunez has a chance to be a 15-20 homer hitter down the road because of his quick hands and twitchy swing that generates plenty of power despite not having the largest frame at 5-10 and 180 pounds.

He’s also a plus runner whose range should allow him to stick in center field.

Don’t be surprised if Antunez’s name is popping up across league-wide prospect rankings in the not-too-distant future.

Cristopher Acosta’s defense stands out

Acosta is one of the most advanced defenders in the 2025 class across the league. The Dominican shortstop is the ideal frame for the position at 6-1 and 180 pounds with some room still to fill out, and with easy, fluid motions with the glove to go along with a cannon for an arm.

On offense, Acosta is a line drive hitter with projectable power, though his swing will need some refinement to make sure that, between the leg kick and his long levers, it doesn’t get too long.

Gerlyn Payano has untapped upside

Dominican outfielder Gerlyn Payano has a couple of extremely loud tools that make him one of the intriguing under-the-radar names in the Brewers’ class. He hits from the left side with a leg kick and fluid, fast hands that lead into a swing meant to launch the ball. He could wind up being one of the Brewers’ top power bats from this class.

The Brewers are expected to announce their entire class Wednesday night. Here is a look at roughly two dozen players expected to sign with Milwaukee.
