The Brewers haven’t had a ton of success historically with international signings. MLB.com’s list of the best international free agent signings of all time for each team lists Mariano Rivera, Shohei Ohtani, and Miguel Cabrera among other superstars. Teddy Higuera, signed in 1983, is listed as the Brewers’ best despite having a single All-Star appearance to his name. In all fairness, Higuera was really good when he played, as his eventual downturn is attributed mainly to injury concerns. Still, it’s been a really long time since the Brewers signed and developed an international player into a true difference maker (although I will never forget you, Nori Aoki).
However, there is a chance the tide is starting to turn. Jackson Chourio, listed as MLB.com’s No. 2 overall prospect before the 2024 season and perhaps Milwaukee’s most promising player, was signed as an international free agent out of Venezuela. Out of the four Brewers prospects that made Baseball Prospectus’ 2025 top 101 list, two of them — SS Jesus Made and C Jeferson Quero — were international signings. Yophery Rodriguez, Luis Lara, and Luis Pena are other top 30 Brewers prospects that were signed as international free agents.
The Brewers sit with $7,555,500 in international bonus money, tied for the most in the majors. Last year, they signed Pena and Made, among other prospects that have the potential to make an impact in the big leagues one day. Who will the Brewers sign this year?
Check back here, as we’ll keep this tracker updated with each international player that the Brewers sign.
