Former Browns star lineman elected to College Football Hall of Fame

IRVING, Texas — Former Cleveland Browns center Alex Mack has been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.

Mack is one of 18 players and four coaches to be elected to this year’s College Football Hall of Fame Class, along with former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer. Mack, a former standout for University of California, Berkeley Golden Bears from 2005-08, was elected to the HOF in his first year on the ballot.

Mack helped lead the Golden Bears to a 34-17 overall record during his collegiate career, including winning all four bowl games he played in — the 2005 Las Vegas Bowl, 2006 Holiday Bowl, 2007 Armed Forces Bowl and 2008 Emerald Bowl. He is the only Cal player ever to win the Draddy Trophy, which has since been renamed the William V. Campbell Trophy, college football’s premier student-athlete award which recognizes both athletic and academic excellence.

Following his collegiate career, Mack was drafted by the Browns in the first round, 21st overall, of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played 13 seasons in the NFL, including his first seven in Cleveland, five seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and one with the San Francisco 49ers before retiring after the 2021 season. He finished his NFL career with seven Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro Second Team honors.

“Alex Mack is what an elite student-athlete and tremendous person should be all about – on the field, in the classroom and in his community,” former Cal head coach Jeff Tedford said in a statement. “Alex was an integral part of the success we enjoyed at Cal and a joy to coach. He gave everything he could on and off the field. I could not be prouder of Alex. His selection to the College Football Hall of Fame is well-deserved and something that only a few of the very best of the best in our game are ever able to realize.”

The 18 players and four coaches elected to this year’s College Football Hall of Fame Class were selected from a national ballot of 77 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision, as well as 101 players and 34 coaches from the divisional ranks, per NFF. The 2025 Class will be inducted during the 67th NFF Annual Awards dinner on Dec. 9 at Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
