Alex Bregman to the Cubs? I Wouldn’t Count On It

Despite our continued warning that free agent third baseman Alex Bregman is unlikely to sign with the Chicago Cubs, the rumors and discussion just won’t stop. From Jon Heyman to Bruce Levine to David Kaplan/Gorden Wittenmeyer to David Haugh, it’s all anyone can talk about. But I think that’s about to change. The one reason this discussion popped up in the first place — his reported willingness to take a short-term deal — has been rescinded. Or was maybe never true in the first place.

Latest MLB Rumros: Alex Bregman

According to Bob Nightengale, who spoke to Alex Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, Bregman is not actually considering short-term offers at the moment:

While Alonso may be willing to accept a short-term deal with the ability to opt out after the 2025 season, Bregman is not going down that path. He has no desire to accept a short-term contract, and remains engaged with several teams like the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox.

“Bregman’s a championship player, teams know it,’’ Boras said. “It’s really a matter of his decision-making and theirs, about how you can close up that gap. There’s substantial interest (in long-term) deals.’’

So that should just about close this converstaion — at least, for the time being.

The ONLY way the Cubs were going to wind up with Alex Bregman was if he took some sort of “I’ve got nothing better” short-term deal. And even in that scenario, we warned that the financial cost, draft pick compensation, and positional overlap were difficult hurdles to overcome. But if he’s still considering only long-term deals, you can fully and officially file this one away.

I suppose I’ll add that Jed Hoyer’s response (on the REKAP Podcast) to questions about a short-term deal with Alex Bregman – and the body language he projected while delivering it – further drives this home: “(At this point), We’re kind of looking to supplement the roster. This time of year, I say it over and over and over, most if not all rumors are not true. I think people use the media, agents use the media to drive things. And a lot of stuff isn’t true.”

Got it. Understood it. Squashed it. Absent some enormous drop off in interest and multi-year offers, there’s just no chance Alex Bregman is signing with the Cubs. And even if that drop does happen, I’m STILL not sure this is where Bregman would end up.
