Ahead of Monday’s College Football Playoff national championship, ticket prices continue to soar. The get-in prices shattered records ahead of Ohio State vs. Notre Dame, according to TickPick and Front Office Sports.
The average purchase price is $2,637 for the title game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, according to TickPick. That makes it the most expensive CFP national championship ever. The cheapest ticket price is also $1,830.
To put this year’s national championship ticket prices in perspective, the average ticket for last year’s game between Alabama and Michigan was $1,934 at SoFi Stadium Los Angeles. That set the record set in 2020 when Alabama took on Ohio State, set at $1,626 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Notre Dame touched down in Atlanta Friday afternoon, and Ohio State is due to land at Hartsfield International Airport Friday evening. The two teams are looking to complete the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff bracket in what’s shaping up to be a highly anticipated title game.
It’s been an interesting ride for both teams this year, each having avoidable losses along the way. Notre Dame infamously fell to Northern Illinois at home in Week 2 while Ohio State lost its rivalry game against Michigan at The Horseshoe to end the regular season – and miss out on the Big Ten Championship. But both teams rebounded well. The Fighting Irish take a 13-game winning streak into the national championship and the Buckeyes won all three College Football Playoff games by multiple scores.
On paper, former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he sees a talent disparity between the two teams. But when it comes to the way both teams approach each matchup, he thinks Notre Dame could give the Buckeyes fits.
“I’ve always used the term ‘talent-equated’ because that’s pretty clear. That means they gots what you got, and sometimes a little better, and that’s the way you game plan,” Meyer said. “I’d always meet with the staff after I did a thorough evaluation because that changes the whole world of how you plan a game. If that team across the sideline has better dudes than you’ve got then, once again, that changes it. And I look at roster-roster.
“And remember Notre Dame lost three or four really good players on – their defense is phenomenal. Al Golden, the defensive coordinator, is a phenomenal coach. They got great players on defense. Remember, they’ve lost four players on defense. Offensively, I just – this is not a talent-equated game on paper. It’s not. And, on film, I would say it’s not. I would say that the Fighting Irish – those gold helmets, the way they play? Rarely does the less-talented team beat a more-talented team. But this is one of those teams that’s got a refuse-to-lose mentality.”
