Who won 2023 CFP national championship? Ohio State, Notre Dame seek Michigan’s crown

No matter who wins the College Football Playoff national championship between Ohio State and Notre Dame, they’ll be getting the crown from a begrudging incumbent.

The Michigan Wolverines have a storied history with both the Buckeyes and the Irish, with the former being their arch-rivals and the latter being a historically close matchup. All three programs have a blue-blood pedigree, and the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish are looking for their ninth and 12th national titles, respectively.

Michigan, of course, won its first national championship since 1997 – and first outright title since 1948 – in the 2023 season with a dominant 34-13 showing over Washington in Houston. That would ultimately be Jim Harbaugh’s final game coaching Michigan football before absconding for the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers, who were eliminated by the Houston Texans in the first round of the playoffs to end his first season.

While Michigan rebuilds under new head coach Sherrone Moore, it’s business as usual for the Buckeyes and the Irish, two teams with perennial championship aspirations. This is Ohio State’s sixth appearance in the College Football Playoffs and Notre Dame’s third.

Who won 2023 College Football Playoff national championship?

The Michigan Wolverines are the defending national champions, having defeated the Washington Huskies 34-13 on Jan. 8, 2024. Harbaugh left for the NFL, whereas the Huskies’ coach last season, Kalen DeBoer, took the Alabama job following the retirement of Nick Saban.

Ryan Day and the Buckeyes will take on Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish looking to usurp that title Monday. For Ohio State, the victory would be extra sweet, as a loss to Michigan led into this dominant CFP run this year.
