After losing the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes, the Toronto Blue Jays still could make a notable addition to their starting rotation.
On Sunday, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reported the Blue Jays have shown interest in signing star pitcher Max Scherzer.
“One reason beyond the obvious that it’s a good idea for the Blue Jays to complete a deal with a slugger such as Anthony Santander or perhaps Pete Alonso: it would make the Blue Jays a more appealing destination for a pitcher like Max Scherzer, someone who’s drawing interest from the Blue Jays,” Nicholson-Smith wrote.
“As currently constructed, the Blue Jays might be a tougher sell for the future Hall of Famer.”
Scherzer, who’ll turn 41 in July, no longer is one of the best pitchers in baseball. He last made an All-Star team in 2021, and last season went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in nine appearances for the Texas Rangers.
However, Scherzer still is an above-average performer when healthy and has a wealth of big-game experience. Whether he’s interested in playing for a team like the Blue Jays, who aren’t considered World Series contenders, at this stage of his career is anyone’s guess.
