Raymond James Stadium reportedly has been selected to host Tampa’s second College Football Playoff national title game, this one in 2029.
Action Network reported Monday morning that Tampa had been chosen to replace Dallas as host for the Jan. 22, 2029, contest after Dallas cited scheduling conflicts. Tampa also hosted the 2017 title game, a 35-31 Clemson triumph against Alabama before a Raymond James Stadium audience of 74,512.
Tampa Bay Sports Commission executive director Rob Higgins, reached Monday in Atlanta (site of Monday night’s CFP final between Ohio State and Notre Dame), wasn’t at liberty to comment on the report. The commission recently submitted a proposal to host the 2029 matchup, but nothing formally has been finalized.
Tampa was the first city in the Southeast to host the CFP national title game in 2017 — the third championship of the CFP era. At the time, the economic impact to the community was estimated at around $300 million.
Tampa, past host of five Super Bowls, is also preparing to host the Women’s Final Four (at Amalie Arena) for the fourth time in April.
