More Evidence that Dan Hurley is the Most Hated Man in College Basketball

Dan Hurley and self-control go together like lamb and tuna fish. Restraint is consistently absent from the UConn sideline and we got another strong dose of that on Tuesday night.

The two-time defending champs already have two losses in Big East play. UConn is 13-5 overall with only three Quad 1 wins. They’re ranked No. 30 by KenPom and No. 32 in the NET. The Huskies are a good team, but they aren’t the same old UConn team that’s dominated the postseason in unprecedented fashion over the last two seasons.

Even though some things have changed, Dan Hurley has not.

“Fiery” would be a lame way to describe his demeanor on the sideline, and if you’ve learned anything from Kentucky Sports Radio over the years, it’s that we are not lame (except BTI). Dan Hurley is college basketball’s Tasmanian Devil, except instead of chasing Bugs Bunny, he’s shouting profanities at fans and officials.

Sometimes, his schtick can be harmless and entertaining. In the first half of tonight’s home game against Butler, he channeled the energy from the court through his body. It’s similar to what you might see from someone who’s experiencing the power of the Holy Ghost at a tent rivival.

That is when Dan Hurley is using that energy for good. There are other times when Danny Hurley uses that energy to become the most self-righteous SOB in the sport. He actually pulled the “Do you know who I am?” card to an official in the middle of a game. It takes a special kind of scoundrel to think that highly of himself, and Hurley certainly fits the billing.

Dan Hurley might be the best coach in college basketball. He might even be the most entertaining in the sport. He’s certainly the easiest to hate. If karma exists, whatever comes back around is going to be even more entertaining than Hurley’s sideline antics.
