How Red Sox Can Finish ‘Incomplete’ Offseason In Style

BOSTON — The Red Sox made impact additions to the starting rotation this winter in Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler.

The group still needs to fill voids to truly compete for the American League East title as Boston’s brass asserted on the first day of the offseason. The Red Sox are better with additions but still need more. Boston president and CEO Sam Kennedy reminded the media of this after a conversation with his father.

“He thinks we have an incomplete roster right now,” Kennedy told reporters during “Fenway Fest” on Jan. 11. “We’re incredibly pleased with where we are. I think (Craig Breslow) has done a really, really good job in terms of addressing the most pressing need, which is obviously pitching. Excited about potentially two guys at the top of that rotation with real No. 1 stuff. Excited about that.”

A reliever and an impact right-handed bat would seal the deal on a blockbuster offseason for the Red Sox. Alex Bregman or Nolan Arenado would take care of the bat and bolster the lineup. Both players remain available if Boston is indeed aggressive enough to finish one of those pursuits.

Elite arms like Tanner Scott and Jeff Hoffman are off the market, but there are still several quality relievers the Red Sox can pursue.

Fill those two needs and Boston can start having serious conversations about earning hats and t-shirts heading into October to end a three-year playoff drought for the Red Sox.

“It feels like we still have work to do,” Kennedy added. “We’re working hard on that. We’re very optimistic about this group.”
