North Central College head baseball coach Ed Mathey has announced the hiring of former Major League Baseball pitcher and broadcaster Dave Otto, who joins the Cardinals’ coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season.
Drafted in the second round of the 1985 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics, Otto also played in the Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago Cubs farm systems over his 10-year career. After retiring in 1995, Otto served as a pitching coach for the Lethbridge Mounties, a minor league team in Alberta, Canada. He also worked as a broadcaster for MLB TV, WGN, and Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
Otto graduated from Elk Grove High School.
Otto was an All-American in 1985 during his final season with the University of Missouri baseball team, where he pitched and was in the lineup as a designated hitter. In his three-year career, Otto hit .366 with 16 home runs while racking up 195 strikeouts on the mound. In 2000, he was inducted into the Tigers’ Hall of Fame.
In the classroom, Otto earned Academic All-American honors in both 1984 and 1985 before returning to campus to finish his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1990. In 1997, he graduated with a master’s degree in management from Northwestern University.
