A big third quarter highlighted another victory for the University of Scranton women’s basketball team Wednesday, 78-39, over Drew University in a Landmark Conference game at Baldwin Gymnasium in Madison, New Jersey.
Already leading by 15 at halftime, the Lady Royals outscored the Lady Rangers in the third quarter, 25-5, as they improved to 18-0 overall and 11-0 in league play. Scranton remains ranked No. 2 in the WBCA Top 25 poll and No. 3 in the d3hoops.com poll. It is one of four undefeated teams in the country along with NYU (16-0), Illinois Wesleyan (18-0) and Bowdoin (18-0).
Kaci Kranson scored 29 points for the Lady Royals on 10-for-15 shooting from the field, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range, and 6 for 8 from the foul line. She also had a team-high four steals. Elizabeth Bennett added 12 points and five rebounds and Kyra Quigley had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Marywood 68, Centenary 50: At Scranton, Marywood University put four players in double figures to average a loss to Centenary four days ago and win an Atlantic East Conference game at Insalaco Arena.
Mia Blume shot 8 for 10 from the field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range, and finished with 21 points for the Pacers, who dropped an 83-53 decision to the Cyclones on Saturday in New Jersey. Rachel McDonald also hit five 3-pointers and added 19 points. Olivia Ciullo had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and Megan Cavoli contributed 10 points, five assists and three steals as Marywood (11-10, 2-4) stopped a three-game slide.
Lycoming 74, Wilkes 64: At Wilkes-Barre, Julianna Askins had 12 points and Dana Wartzenluft 11 for Wilkes University (0-18, 0-11) in its Landmark Conference loss to Lycoming College at the Marts Center.
Lebanon Valley 62, King’s 40: At Wilkes-Barre, Lauren Casey had 13 points and eight rebounds for King’s College (6-12, 2-5) in its MAC Freedom Conference loss to Lebanon Valley College at McGrane Gymnasium.
DeSales 49, Misericordia 29: At Dallas, Ava Cirigliano and Caitlin Sweeney each scored six points for Misericordia in its MAC Freedom loss to DeSales University. Emily Romanowski added five points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars (4-15, 2-5).
Men’s basketball
Drew University hit 15 3-pointers and shot 57.1 percent from the field (36 for 63) to knock off the University of Scranton, 95-67, in a Landmark Conference game Wednesday at the John Long Center.
Matthew Zenker led four players in double figures for the Rangers (15-3, 11-0) with 27 points on 11-for-14 shooting, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. Valley View grad Eli Yusavage played 19 minutes off the bench and totaled three points, one rebound and two steals.
A 20-6 run over the final 5:27 of the first half gave the Rangers a 49-33 halftime lead. They shot 70.0 percent (21 for 30) in the opening 20 minutes.
Sammy Tornabene led the Royals (9-9, 4-7) with 17 points and also had five assists and two blocks. Will McLoughlin added 12 points, four rebounds and six assists.
Marywood 75, Centenary 54: At Scranton, Brendan Franko had 20 points to lead Marywood University to an Atlantic East Conference win over Centenary at Insalaco Arena.
Franko also grabbed nine rebounds to finish one shy of a double-double.
Marywood led by 10 at halftime. Centenary cut the deficit to seven early in the second half, but the Pacers scored eight straight points to open a 50-35 lead with 13:38 left. The Cyclones never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Shilo Bivins added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Pacers (11-9, 3-4), who avenged an 83-64 loss to the Cyclones on Saturday in New Jersey. Mason Mendygral had 12 points and Brandon Reed chipped in 11 points.
Wilkes 86, Lycoming 72: At Williamsport, Wilkes University fell behind by 19 points in the opening eight minutes, but erupted for 51 second-half points to earn a Landmark Conference victory over Lycoming College at Lamade Gymnasium.
West Scranton graduate Cayden Merrifield led the Colonels (13-5, 7-4) with 19 points. Joey Zvorsky added a career-high 18 points and also pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. Colin Ackerman chipped in 16 points off the bench.
DeSales 89, Misericordia 73: At Center Valley, Kevin Lazdowsky had 19 points and five assists for Misericordia in its MAC Freedom loss at DeSales University. Jack Gallagher added 16 points and six rebounds for the Cougars (10-8, 3-4).
Lebanon Valley 87, King’s 53: At Annville, Chris Patton scored 21 points and grabbed six rebounds for King’s in its MAC Freedom loss to Lebanon Valley College. Jawane Buckner added 12 points for the Monarchs (7-9, 2-5).
