Gulf Coast set to help host the 4th Visit Panama City Beach JUCO Baseball Classic

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -What a weekend ahead it is for baseball fans in our area, along with the teams of Northwest Florida, Chipola and Gulf Coast. For the fourth year, the Commodores are teaming up with Visit Panama City Beach and Publix Sports Park to host some of the best teams in the country for three days of play in the Visit PCB JUCO Classic. ” You know it’s been awesome the first three years.” says Gulf Coast head baseball coach Tyler Younger. “I would say we’ve had between 100 to 120 professional scouts at it each year. So, we’ll probably have that again. This year we’ve got a 14-team field, we had 16 teams, but a couple of teams had to drop out because of scheduling issues. But it’s going to be 14 of the best teams in the country coming down here. And perfect game is going to help us with the event and put it all over social media and that type of stuff. But it’s just, you’re going to see some of these guys names Called in July in the draft. “

The Commodores really enjoying the experience this time last year as they took the title in year three of the Classic with wins over Pearl River, St. Johns River, Northwest Florida and Wallace of Dothan. Obviously coach Younger hoping for more of the same though he knows with this level of competition this early in the season, much of it, he says, is about testing your team and your players.

“You know it’s obviously super early and we’re going to do some stuff, mixing and matching lineups and putting guys in situations against good teams. Kind of see who can do what, kind of give us some stuff moving forward on what guys can handle what situations. You know, obviously we won the thing last year, so we’re defending our crown and you would love to win it again. But if you go out there and you have a tough weekend, you know you know what you need to practice moving forward. And you tell guys maybe we’re not as good as we thought we were. Or we went out there and played well and now you have a big target on your back. So either way you’ve got to continue to get better. “

The games begin at 10 a.m. Friday. For more information and a schedule of the games click on the following link:
