Wade revealed he had a cancerous tumor removed from his kidney.

He needed 40 percent of his right kidney removed 13 months ago.

In the episode of The Why with Dwyane Wade, he shared how “shocking” the diagnosis was.

Wade said he was inspired by his father, who battled prostate cancer, to go see the doctor for issues he was having.

He detailed having stomach pain, cramps, and issues urinating.

“On the process of checking, like, ‘Why is my piss coming out slow, why is my stream ain’t powerful? Why is it a little weak?'” Wade said.

After receiving a full-body scan, it was revealed that Wade had the tumor on his kidney.

“And the doctor was like, ‘You need to have kidney surgery,'” he said.

Multiple other doctors gave Wade the same suggestion, and he underwent the surgery on December 18, 2023.

After removing the section of his kidney, doctors confirmed that Wade’s tumor was cancerous.

Wade said that medical experience helped him learn more about being a family.

“My own journey to have that surgery, I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” he said.

“That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life.

“The moment I was by myself, I was struggling, dog.”

While getting through the surgery was tough, Wade said it was the right decision.

New rights deal

The NBA signed an 11-year deal with three networks for the league’s rights from the 2025-26 season.

And there will be no games on TNT for the first time since the network launched in 1988.

The Walt Disney Company will continue to show the league with 80 regular-season games across ESPN and ABC.

They will also show around 18 playoff games from the first and second round, a Conference Finals series for 10 of the 11 years, and remain the home of the NBA Finals.

NBC will return as an NBA broadcaster for the first time since 2002.

The network will show up to 100 games per season across it’s channels and Peacock streaming service.

It will also be the home of NBA All-Star and show approximately 28 playoff games from the first and second round.

NBC will show one Conference Finals Series for six of the 11 years, rotating with new broadcaster Amazon Prime.

Amazon will show 66 NBA regular-season games including one on Black Friday.

The streaming service is also the home of the latter stages of the NBA Cup and the entire Play-In Tournament.

Prime will also broadcast around one third of the playoff games in the first and second round.

“I had a personal decision to make, and what it was was, ‘If this is cancerous, if this tumor, this cyst is cancerous, on your kidney, you’re 41 years old, you probably need surgery because it’s something that needs to be removed so it doesn’t spread,'” he said.

Wade said he also learned that it was okay to be weak in front of his family.

“As a man, you never want your family to see you weak,” he said.

“Don’t want to be perceived weak, don’t want to be seen in your weakest moments but I had to.

“What I saw in the midst of me going through my illness, I saw my family that may not always talk, may not always agree.

“I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me and in that process, in my weakness I found strength in my family.”
