College baseball: Indians get first win behind Stolsworth

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Payne Stolsworth (West Rowan) pitched seven shutout innings, as Catawba’s baseball team beat Lynn 3-0 on Saturday for its first win of the season and the 991st for head coach Jim Gantt.
Stolsworth was in control, striking out 11 and walking one. He allowed five hits.
Freshman Joe Burleyson (East Rowan) held the lead in the eighth, and Sam Alessi pitched the ninth for a save.
Catawba had 11 hits, 10 singles and a double by Ty Hubbard (South Rowan).
Nathan Chrismon (South) and Dylan Driver (Carson) had two hits each and drove in runs.
• Catawba bounced back from a 7-6,, extra-inning loss at Nova Southeastern on Friday night. Cole Hales (Carson) hit a two-run homer in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
