The Pima Community College baseball team improved to 10-0 after completing the four-game series sweep of Colorado Northwestern by winning both games of Saturday’s doubleheader at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field.
The Aztecs produced their seventh walk-off victory of the season as part of the two wins Saturday.
Sophomore Caden Richards went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs and two walks to lead the effort in both games.
Sophomore Collin Senior was 2 for 6 with two RBIs. Freshman Jackson Glueck and Sean Barta (formerly of Arizona) hit home runs while freshman Luis Pablo Navarro (Walden Grove) and sophomore Lucas Casey (Canyon del Oro grad who played at Cal State Northridge last year) produced quality starts.
Game 1: (23) Pima 11, Colorado Northwestern 1 (5 innings): Sophomore Nolan Ganter produced Pima’s seventh walk-off win of the season as he hit a two-run RBI double to bring around freshman Matt McDonald and Richards to secure the run-rule win. MacDonald, Richards and freshman Max Leyva (Tucson) loaded the bases with three straight walks with one out to set up Ganter’s hit in the fifth inning.
The Aztecs got their offense going in the second inning when freshman Zach Plasschaert (formerly of Arizona) hit an RBI double to drive in Barta and put Pima on the scoreboard.
Glueck followed with a two-run homer to make it 3-0. The Aztecs loaded the bases as Richards hit a sacrifice fly and Senior knocked in freshman Ramon Martinez with his RBI single to cap off a five-run inning.
The Aztecs took advantage of some miscues and Richards hit another sacrifice fly as Pima scored three runs in the third ining to make it 8-0. Glueck, Martinez and Macdonald scored the runs in the inning.
Barta led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field as the Aztecs went up 9-0.
Ganter finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs while Glueck went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs. Barta was 1 for 1 with an RBI, two runs and two walks. Senior was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Plasschaert went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Richards had two RBIs, a run and two walks.
Navarro picked up the win as he pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Game 2: (23) Pima 7, Colorado Northwestern CC 0: Casey pitched five innings of no-hit ball as he gave up no runs with seven strikeouts and two walks. It was his second straight start pitching five innings and not giving up a hit.
The Aztecs scored two runs in the first inning. Senior hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman Leon Cereceres, who led off with a single. Richards reached base on a single and would eventually score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
The Aztecs padded their lead in the sixth inning. A throwing error to first base brought around MacDonald, freshman Andrew Grenert and freshman Quintin Hennesy. Cereceres and Richards hit back-to-back RBI singles to complete the five-run inning.
Cereceres and Richards combined to go 5 for 8 with two RBIs, three runs and two steals in the first two spots in the batting order. Cereceres was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs while Richards went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run.
The Aztecs will hit the road for the first time this season as they open ACCAC conference play Saturday against Paradise Valley. The first game of the doubleheader starts at 12:00 p.m.
