DIFFERENT GAME IN 2025 THAN IT WAS WHEN TOM OSBORNE RETIRED FROM COACHING BACK IN 1997. YOU TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER. IT’S REALLY CHANGED COLLEGE SPORTS AS A WHOLE. SINCE OSBORNE FINISHED HIS TENURE AS NEBRASKA’S ATHLETIC DIRECTOR BACK IN 2013. AND AS HE TOLD OUR ROB MCCARTNEY, THE CHANGE HAS NOT BEEN ALL GOOD. COACHES HAVE CONTRACTS, PLAYERS ARE TOTALLY FREE AGENTS AT ANY TIME THEY CAN LEAVE AND THAT’S NOT GOOD. ACCORDING TO TOM OSBORNE, WHO HATES TO SEE PLAYERS TRANSFER MULTIPLE TIMES DURING A COLLEGIATE CAREER, USUALLY TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER. AND WITH REVENUE SHARING ON THE HORIZON, ALONG WITH COLLECTIVES AND NIL, THE HALL OF FAME COACH THINKS THE CURRENT MODEL WILL NOT LAST. YOU HAVE A FEW SCHOOLS THAT ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO GO TO THE MAX, 22 MILLION OR WHATEVER IT IS, AND THEY’RE GOING TO BE AN AWFUL LOT OF SCHOOLS THAT AREN’T GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT. SO COMPETITIVE BALANCE IS GOING TO BE AN ISSUE. THE NFL SOLVED THAT ISSUE WITH A SALARY CAP. BUT IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL, FOR NOW, IT’S THE WILD, WILD WEST. OSBORNE LOOKS TO THE BIG TEN AND SEC CONFERENCES AS THE LEADERS OF THE COLLEGE GAME. AND HE SAYS HE HOPES THEY CONTINUE TO COOPERATE. I THINK IF THOSE TWO CONFERENCES CAN GET TOGETHER, THEY MAY BE ABLE TO ESTABLISH SOME GUIDELINES THAT WILL MAKE SENSE. I THINK THE NCAA HAS BECOME SOMEWHAT IRRELEVANT. IT DOESN’T SEEM TO HAVE ANY CLOUT ANYMORE. AND SO THERE HAS TO BE SOME MANAGING AGENCY WITHIN COLLEGE ATHLETICS THAT CAN INTERJECT SOME COMMON SENSE. ROB MCCARTNEY CONTINUES THE CONVERSATION WITH TOM OSBORNE ON CHRONICLE. THE FOCUS IS THE TEAMMATES MENTORING PROGRAM. THAT’S ALL COMIN

Husker football legend Tom Osborne shares his thoughts of current state of college football
College football is such a different game in 2025 than it was when Tom Osborne retired from coaching back in 1997, and to take it a step further, so much has changed in college sports since Osborne finished his tenure as Nebraska’s athletic director in 2013.And as the legendary Husker coach told KETV’s Rob McCartney, the change has not been all good.”I guess my hope is the Big Ten, the Southeast Conference have a great many, most of the major programs, and I think they seem to be wanting to cooperate. I think that if those two conferences can get together, they may be able to establish some guidelines that’ll make sense. I think the NCAA has become somewhat irrelevant. It doesn’t seem to have any clout anymore, and so there has to be kind of managing agency within college athletics to interject some common sense,” he said.See more from Osborne in the video above.NAVIGATE: Home | Weather | Local News | National | Sports | Newscasts on demand |
