Amari Powell helped lead the Holland High School football program from three winless seasons to a team with a winning record.
The senior quarterback earned honorable mention all-state honors as he led the Dutch within two spots of making the playoffs.
Now, it is time to help another team rise.
Powell committed to play football at Calvin University on Wednesday after receiving offers to play at a plethora of schools.

The Knights will be in their second year as a football program, putting Powell in a similar situation.
“I chose Calvin for multiple reasons, the main reason was when I got there, they treated me like family. They have great facilities as well. Also, I wanted to be a part of something special. Coming from Holland I’ve been a part of an upcoming of a program and I’ve seen the slow and hard grind it takes to get things going,” Powell said. “I also love that it’s only about 40 minutes away from home. I’m a mama’s boy at heart and I don’t think I could be so far away. They’re also Christ-centered, so I really think it will help me grow my faith and to make me a better man all around.”
Powell threw for 1,7-4 yards and 21 touchdowns last year. He also rushed for two touchdowns, earning all-conference and all-region honors.
“Amari is a very dynamic player that can turn any play into a highlight. He was a great leader and work horse,” Holland coach Will Siffin said.
That will help Powell hit the ground running at Calvin.
