Bunkie Panthers sign to college football

BUNKIE, La. (KALB) – Four Bunkie High School student-athletes signed their National Letters of Intent (NILs) to play at the collegiate level.

Among the signees were Bunkie Football quarterback Dillon Compton alongside wide receiver Kyle Johnson.

KALB spoke with Compton, Johnson and Head Coach Jimmie Hillman about what is next.

“These kids are high GPA, high ACT and that’s really the hidden part of the recruitment process that…kinda gets overlooked,” said Coach Hillman. “A lot of people see really good players and think ‘yeah, that’s a great athlete,’ but these are some great students too, and that’s what it takes to get to this point.”

Compton will suit up for the Southern Jaguars, a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) team in Baton Rouge.

“It feels like home to me,” Compton said. “You want to be somewhere that you can be happy at…Southern just felt like home to me.”

Meanwhile, Johnson will head to Mississippi State to play for the Bulldogs in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

“From one point thinking that it’s not possible,” said Johnson. “Then, senior year going play at one of the biggest stages of college football…it’s a blessing.”
