I was scrolling through Facebook earlier today when I came across a college football fan page that broke down Clemson’s record against every ACC member that plays football, including Cal and Stanford.
It was amazing what the owner of the page admitted. He was surprised Georgia Tech had such a big lead on Clemson in the all-time series, and was surprised by the amount of time Clemson and Miami have met on the football field.
I was also taken back by some of the snotty comments posted below the graphic, including ones that indicated Clemson’s only success in football has come under Dabo Swinney.
Maybe I should not have been surprised. I have assumed all college football fans know the game and at least a little bit of the history from some of the sports’ top programs.
Clemson has 808 wins, which ranks 13th nationally all-time among major college football programs. The Tigers have won 28 conference championships over the years. It has won three national championships and played for it a total of five times.
The program has 27 bowl wins, which ranks 10th all-time and 51 bowl/CFP appearances, which is 12th all-time.
Hall of Fame Coaches John Heisman—yes, that John Heisman—Jess Neely, Frank Howard and Danny Ford were all head coaches at Clemson and had great success there.
Clemson has had many great teams over the years, including great teams in the 1900s, 1920s. 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1980s and of course now.
As you can see, I kind of get wound up when people write or say things without any knowledge of what they are talking about.
Granted, Dabo Swinney has done more for Clemson Football than any coach before him, including the Hall of Fame Coaches I mentioned above. However, Clemson was one of college football’s best programs before Dabo Swinney and it will continue to be afterwards.
Hopefully, they will have the same kind of success Swinney has brought to Tigertown when he does decide to call it quits one day, which I hope is no time soon.
It’s amazing how little people know about the teams and schools in the sport that they claim they love so much.
Granted, I do not know every little tradition or everything about every college football team in America. However, I do know who the top programs have been over the course of the sport’s history.
I don’t like Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, USC and Texas to name a few, but I sure as heck respect them and I definitely know about their history. I admit, I do not know everything about them, but I do know enough that I am not going to shoot off at the mouth and disrespect a program.
Again, maybe I should not have been surprised. But I was. I just thought college football fans were more educated and respectful than the ones I encountered earlier today.
