COLLEGE BASKETBALL: FLCC men’s and women’s splits Sophomore Night

CANANDAIGUA — There are tons of local players on the men’s and women’s Finger Lakes Community College Lakers basketball teams this season.

Both teams were home on Tuesday night as they welcomed in Cayuga Community College for Sophomore Night.

The women’s team rolled over CCC in a 67-41 victory while the men’s team lost a tough one to CCC by a final score of 71-69 to snap FLCC’s minor two-game win streak.

The women Lakers had lost four of five going into Tuesday, but this is a 2024-25 season that has already witnessed freshman guard and Waterloo state champion Jazzmyn Lewis break the school’s record.

“It’s an amazing feat for Jazz to break a two-year career record in just sixteen games,” said FLCC women’s basketball head coach Maureen Loyal. “With nine games left in our season, she still has time to build on that number. She amazes me with how she tracks the ball and gains possession so quickly. She has great instincts and athleticism to go after the ball and comes away with it time after time. It has helped us be competitive and successful this year. Our team defense, I think, is one of the best around, and Jazzmyn is a central component of that success.”

Lewis collected a game-high six steals in the big win over CCC. She also tallied 18 points and 13 rebounds to fashion a big night.

Lakers first-year guard Dalayla Alexander led with a team-high 20 points.

On the men’s side, this is a 2024-25 roster that has seven total players from either the two Finger Lakes leagues, Wayne County league and Canandaigua Academy, which plays in Monroe County.

Geneva graduate Anthony Torres has been a big piece to the Lakers this season and the sophomore recorded 25 points in the close loss to CCC, tying him for the game-high honors.

Newark graduate Kellen Foster and Canandaigua graduate Joe Caito each provided eight points in the contest as well.

Both teams will be back in action on Thursday when they head to play at SUNY Broome Community College. The women’s team will tip off at 6 p.m. while the men’s will get going at approximately 8 p.m.
