Alex Bregman free agent update: Detroit Tigers target gets better offer from old team?

  • The Detroit Tigers are still looking to add an impact free-agent bat.
  • 3B Alex Bregman remains unsigned a little over two weeks before spring training games begin.
  • The Houston Astros have reported upped their offer to Bregman, though it’s “unlikely” to be enough.

The Detroit Tigers are still in the hunt for Alex Bregman, as they look for a free-agent upgrade to the lineup a couple weeks before spring training games start.

But they’re far from the only team pursuing the third baseman this month.

After striking out with their initial six-year, $156 million offer (and then moving on to other infield options), the Houston Astros reportedly have upped their attempt to bring back the last impact free-agent hitter on the market.

Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman walks on the field before the game against the Los Angeles Angels at Minute Maid Park on Sept. 22, 2024 in Houston.

LET’S MAKE A DEAL:Tigers want position player in free agency, trade but is it Alex Bregman or bust?

The Astros, who added former Tiger Isaac Paredes at third (via trade) and free agent Christian Walker at first base, have discussed moving All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve to the outfield to make room for Bregman on the dirt, but that and their latest offer is “unlikely” to bring the nine-year infielder back into the Houston fold, at least according to Houston TV broadcaster Ari Alexander.

In addition to the Tigers and Astros, the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox are still reportedly chasing Bregman. The Sox’s pursuit, though, may be hung up on length of contract, as the Boston Globe reported they preferred not to offer more than a four-year deal.
