This is NOT Carolina basketball.
Uninspired, disappointing, embarrassing. Those are just some of the words that can be used to describe the UNC basketball program’s latest blowout loss.
The only thing that seems to change is the opponent they are facing. Everything else continues to be status quo.
North Carolina kept up with Clemson for a portion of the first half, but quickly just fell into a deep hole that they couldn’t get out of. One of the best three-point shooting teams in the conference, Clemson had more open looks than the guys competing in this year’s NBA three-point contest, as they did what you’d expect good shooting teams to do.
Make their shots.
The Tar Heels, on the other hand, chucked up 19 shots from deep, connecting on only four. Two of those came from fifth-year graduate guard RJ Davis, arguably one of only two players (including Seth Trimble) who seemed to have any ounce of care on the court.
Don’t worry, Hubert Davis banked the majority of his timeouts, even when Clemson went on some scorching runs (I wonder if he gets a bonus for how many timeouts he keeps).
This was an abysmal performance by the Tar Heels, but at this point, did we expect anything less? We’ve talked about the poor roster construction a ton but knowing what you’re roster is at this point, my question is:
Why does it seem like no adjustments are made?
Ian Jackson, who was one of the conference’s elite scoring threats for a good stretch of the season, hasn’t connected on a field goal in two straight games. If he isn’t scoring, he is simply unplayable, as his defensive effort (or lack there of) and inability to make things happen in other aspects should force the five-star freshman to the bench.
Elliot Cadeau put together another six turnover outing, as Davis seems to never hold his point guard accountable for his turnover issues.
Don’t even get us started on the bigs (or Cade Tyson either).
This team has done something that is very hard to do: make die-hard UNC basketball fans hate watching college basketball. It’s safe to say that this team is cooked: unless a miracle occurs and they win the ACC Tournament, this group will not be playing meaningful basketball in March.
There’s plenty of blame to go around, but it starts with the head coach and works its way down to the very end of the bench. A lot of tough questions are going to need to be addressed over the next few weeks, as the state of the UNC basketball program is in a very bad place at the current moment.
