Tennessee won its first national championship in program history when it defeated Texas A&M in the 2024 College World Series finals, and the Volunteers are loaded once more with a roster that ranks as highly as No. 2 in the preseason polls. It is extremely difficult to win back-to-back titles in college baseball, though, and there are a myriad of other capable squads who will push Tony Vitello’s team in 2025 — many of which reside within Tennessee’s own conference.
Last year’s CWS featured only the SEC and ACC with both leagues sending four teams apiece to Omaha, and the power dynamic remains mostly intact this spring. Oregon State and Oregon are, by most measures, the top two candidates to break through that stronghold, and Big 12 frontrunner Oklahoma State is in the conversation, too.
Projecting the CWS field in February comes with its challenges as the best teams on paper rarely construct the final eight spots in the bracket come season’s end. A clear pecking order is in place, though, ahead of this weekend’s openers.
