When Staten Islander John Downey was the head baseball coach for St. Joseph’s University Brooklyn in 2024, he had recruited five Staten Islanders to come play. So when he left to become the assistant head coach at Bloomfield College to start this season, he left an open door for those players to come with him.
And, of course, those players — Mike Felumero (St. Peter’s HS product and pitcher), Frank Scerra Jr. (Tottenville HS infielder/catcher), Matthew Rao (St. Joseph by-the-Sea pitcher), George Wonica (Susan Wagner pitcher) and his son, John Downey Jr. (Sea pitcher) — followed him.
