TUSCALOOSA Ala. (WBRC) – You can feel the momentum building in Tuscaloosa. A historic top two matchup will take place Saturday as Alabama hosts Auburn at Coleman Coliseum.
The Tide and Tigers aren’t the only teams in Alabama having successful seasons. So far, we’ve counted at least 10 college basketball teams around the state seeing plenty of wins this season. Teams are either leading their conferences, tied or close to leading them.
Perren King, the Executive Director of the Alabama Sports Council, tells us this continues to prove that Alabama is more than just a football state. King says successful basketball programs bring in top talent from coaches to players and that helps build brands which he says ultimately drives more money into the state and local economies.
“People are making more decisions to be able to start to come to these universities. Everything from merchandise, sales to that strong community and local presence. And then there’s pride. What that does is we’re starting to see that it has that ripple effect to be able to bring in more dollars into the coffers of these serving universities here,” King said.
Jacksonville State University, Samford, UAB, Troy, Miles College and others are all seeing plenty of wins this season.
Saturday’s “Iron Bowl” of college basketball will likely go down to the wire. Tipoff is set for 3pm. ESPN’s College Gameday will be in town as well.
