Why Red Sox Can Legitimately Challenge Yankees For AL East Title

The Boston Red Sox pulled off a big-time move late Wednesday night by reportedly agreeing to a three-year deal with free-agent infielder Alex Bregman.

“This is significant news,” insider Jon Morosi said on MLB Network. “We can now officially start spring training now that Alex Bregman has signed. This was officially the last bit of news we were waiting on.”

Not only did the Red Sox finally land their long-coveted right-handed bat, but they also changed the landscape of their division, according to Morosi.

“This changes the American League East,” Morosi said. “The Boston Red Sox now have a legitimate lineup to threaten that of the New York Yankees.”

Morosi went on to explain that even though the Yankees brought in Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt after losing Juan Soto to the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bregman is a proven postseason performer.

Bregman brings extensive postseason experience, having been on the dynastic Astros teams of the past eight years — over those postseasons, he has played in 99 games with 19 home runs and a .789 OPS.

The two-time World Series champion is coming off a down year at the plate, slashing .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs in 2024, but is a .375 career hitter with seven homers and 15 RBIs in 21 regular season games at Fenway Park.
