Injury concerns continue to plague the Los Angeles Angels as third baseman Anthony Rendon is set to undergo hip surgery. Following multiple injury setbacks in recent seasons, Rendon’s latest surgery will keep him sidelined for an extended period. This marks yet another challenge in his tenure with the Angels, where his availability has been limited due to recurring health issues.
Here are the latest updates on Anthony Rendon’s hip surgery, the impact on the Angels’ roster, and what this means for his future with the team.
Anthony Rendon will undergo hip surgery
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon will undergo left hip surgery, as confirmed by general manager Perry Minasian on Wednesday. This surgery follows a setback in his offseason rehabilitation, further delaying his return to the field. Rendon, 34, has struggled with injuries throughout his tenure with the Angels and will now miss a significant portion of the 2025 MLB season.

This is not the first time Rendon has required hip surgery. In 2022, he underwent a season-ending procedure on his right hip as well. Rendon’s left hip issues arose after multiple stints on the injured list in 2024. He dealt with a hamstring tear, back inflammation, and an oblique strain. Despite efforts to recover without surgery, medical evaluations determined that the procedure was necessary.
Since signing a seven-year, $245 million contract with the Angels after the 2019 season, Rendon has failed to stay healthy. Rendon had an impressive 2019 season with the Washington Nationals, hitting .319 with 34 home runs and 126 RBIs. However, his performance has steadily declined since joining the Angels. In his five seasons with the Angels, he has played only 257 games while missing 451 due to injuries. His OPS with the Angels (.717) pales in comparison to his Nationals tenure. (via ESPN)
With Rendon sidelined, the Angels have turned to Yoán Moncada, who reportedly signed a $5 million contract. Moncada, 29, has also struggled with injuries but is expected to take over at third base. The Angels have also signed infielders Kevin Newman and J.D. Davis to provide additional depth.
Rendon remains under contract for $38.5 million annually through 2026, raising questions about his future with the organization. Given his injury history and diminishing performance, his role with the team could shift if he manages to return to action.
