College basketball: Ridgewater closes out regular season with a ‘W’

WORTHINGTON — The Ridgewater men’s basketball team closed the regular season Saturday by assuring itself of a postseason berth.

Ridgewater beat Minnesota West 101-82, enabling the Warriors to advance to the Region XIII tournament Friday through Sunday, March 2 in Rochester.

Ridgewater is 6-6 in the MCAC South Division, 14-10 overall and has earned itself the fourth seed from its division. Minnesota West finishes 5-7 in the MCAC South and 19-10 overall.

Pairings have yet to be announced.

On Saturday, the Warriors broke open a 38-38 halftime tie to beat the Bluejays. Tyrese Mayo and DeAndre Holloway led the way. Mayo, a 5-foot-11 freshman from Winter Haven, Florida, had 24 points, three assists and three steals. Holloway, a 6-7 freshman from Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, had 21 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.

Zackery Rygg led Minnesota West with 21 points and seven rebounds. He’s a 6-3 sophomore from San Antonio, Texas.

Minnesota West 73, Ridgewater 48

Minnesota West Community College out-scored Ridgewater 43-25 in the second half on its way to the Minnesota College Athletic Conference South Division victory at Worthington.

The Lady Jays are ranked second in the nation in NJCAA Division III and have an 8-1 conference and 16-8 overall record. Ridgewater fell to 2-8 in the MCAC South and 3-19 overall.

Sadie Krahling led Minnesota West with 21 points, four assists and four steals. Katrina Schutz had 10 points, 13 rebounds and five blocked shots for the Lady Jays. Krahling is a 5-10 freshman from Adrian. Schutz is a 6-foot freshman from Eden Valley-Watkins.

Ridgewater used six players. The Warriors were led by Naveah Rahm, who had 12 points, and Julia Hines who added 10. Rahm is a 6-0 freshman from Fairmont. Hines is a 5-2 freshman from Randolph.

The Warriors close out the season at 6 p.m. Friday against Minnesota North-Vermillion at 6 p.m. Friday at Northland Community and Technical College in Park Rapids.
