Florida is the early hot answer for a program ready to return to prominence in 2025. After a 3-3 start, Billy Napier looked like a sitting duck. In a shocking turn of events, the team rallied around their head coach, playing inspired football. They ended the campaign on a four-game win streak, including a pair of ranked victories against LSU and Ole Miss.
The season turned around with the insertion of DJ Lagway as the unrivaled quarterback atop the depth chart. The freshman was a revelation—his combination of creating out of structure and tantalizing arm talent helped to elevate a middling offense around him. Analysts have taken notice of Lagway’s potential—notably 247’s Chris Hummer, who has Lagway taking a leap to superstardom in 2025.
“Lagway finished the year with 1,915 yards and 12 touchdowns against nine interceptions and a 60% completion rate,” Hummer wrote. “And that’s the worst Lagway will be in his career. Few quarterbacks come with the ceiling of Lagway, a monster at 6-foot-3, 239 pounds with a rocket for an arm. Given a full year of development and reps as QB1, expect Lagway to emerge as one of the top overall passers in the country.”
The Gators weren’t very active in the transfer portal but have an incoming top-ten recruiting class. The group plays another gauntlet of an SEC schedule, but with Lagway under center, that might not be as detrimental as in recent years. The 19-year-old has risen to the occasion in his young career and will only be better.
Will Lagway earn superstar status in his second season? Florida is losing their top two receiving leaders from 2024 but bringing back a presumably healthy Eugene Wilson III and a backfield with high upside. It might not always be pretty, but Lagway has top-ten signal caller in the country traits.
