SALT LAKE CITY—It’s always a big game when the BYU Cougars and Utah Utes square off in any sport, but the 2024 matchup also provided one of the best college football uniform combinations last season.
Uniform Authority ranked the Utes all-red and BYU all-blue as the No. 2 uni combo in 2024.

Remembering Utah Vs. BYU
In a game where the Utah defense dominated, the undefeated Cougars held on for just long enough to have a chance at the end of the game. A late penalty kept BYU’s last possession alive, and some more late-game heroics for Jake Retzlaff and company set Will Ferrin up from 44 yards out. He sent the game-winning field goal through the uprights with three seconds left, making him a legend in Provo forever.
A Keelan Marion kickoff return for six and a Will Ferrin field goal gave the undefeated Cougars a 10-7 lead early in the second period.

The Utes answered with a nearly eight-minute drive, capping it with Brant Kuithe’s second touchdown of the night. Micah Bernard gave the Utes a 21-10 halftime lead with a rushing score in the last two minutes.
Utah never scored again after the Cougar’s defense adjusted and shut down freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson in the final 30 minutes.
Ferrin’s second field goal was the only third-quarter points, setting the stage for another memorable finish in a series that has delivered many.
Trailing 21-13, Jake Retzlaff led his team on a nine-play, 95-yard drive that ended with the redshirt junior’s one-yard plunge. A failed two-point conversion left Utah in front, 21-19 with 12:35 left.
Kyle Whittingham’s team had three possessions in the fourth with a chance to add points but gained ten total yards as all three drives ended with a punt.

No. 9 BYU took over with 1:48 on the clock, needing a field goal to steal a win from their biggest rival.
After a controversial holding penalty against the Utes, Retzlaff connected with Chase Roberts and Darius Lassiter through the air, moving the Cougars into Ute territory. Three running plays set the Cougars up for a 44-yard FG attempt.
Ferrin calmly split the uprights with three seconds left, giving BYU perhaps its most improbable win of the year.
