Yavapai College Baseball Sweeps Ottawa University, Extends Win Streak to Nine

The Yavapai College Roughriders baseball team continues to dominate, sweeping a doubleheader against Ottawa University earlier today. With 6-2 and 12-1 victories, Yavapai extended their winning streak to an impressive nine games.

Game 1: Roughriders Set the Tone with a 6-2 Win

The action began at noon, with the Roughriders taking control early to secure a 6-2 victory over the Ottawa Spirit.

Key highlights:

Power at the Plate: Matthew Peterson and Justin Cherrington each hit a home run. Additional RBIs came from Kevin Ramos, Brady Francisco, and Nathan Nichols, who drove in two runs.

Speed on the Bases: Nichols showcased his speed with three stolen bases, while AJ Diaz, Ramos, and Francisco each added one.

Strong Pitching: Shane Hooper threw three innings and recorded six strikeouts. Chase Blease and Ty Thompson combined for five more, keeping the Spirit’s offense in check.

Defensive Standouts: Francisco dominated in the field with 11 putouts, while Cherrington and Peterson contributed three each. Thompson, Ramos, and Francisco provided key fielding assists.

Game 2: Offensive Explosion Leads to 12-1 Rout

The Roughriders carried their momentum into Game 2, overpowering Ottawa 12-1.

Offensive leaders:

Run Scorers: Reid Hurtt, Nichols, Derek Kiepke, and Cherrington each crossed home plate twice. Carson Feddema, Diaz, Lucas Franz, and Caleb Horsey added one run apiece.

RBIs: Cherrington led with three RBIs, while Diaz, Ramos, Franz, Nichols, Kiepke, and Horsey also drove in runs.

Stolen Bases: Diaz, Nichols, and Cherrington each swiped a base.

Pitching and Defense:

Pitching Depth: Kyle Lockridge started on the mound, pitching 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. Justin Parkes, Owen Fernandes, and even third baseman AJ Diaz saw time on the mound, with Parkes striking out two batters in just two appearances.

Defensive Excellence: Catcher Lucas Franz secured six putouts, while Peterson and Cherrington added two each.

The Roughriders aim to keep their win streak alive as they travel to face Eastern Arizona in a three-game series. The action kicks off on Friday, February 28, at 2 PM, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 1, at 12 PM and 2:30 PM.
