Around the Empire: Yankees news

ESPN: The Yankees were linked with a trade for Nolan Arenado at various points earlier in the offseason. They got to see him in-person in their 7-0 win over the Cardinals on Wednesday, the third baseman going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, though Arenado dispelled the notion that the game was a showcase in front of a potential future team. St. Louis POBO John Mozeliak most recently signaled the team’s intention to hold onto Arenado this season, though I’m sure they’d still jump at an opportunity to get as much of his $74 million salary over the next three years off the books. At that price and given his declining production, it’s easy to see why the Yankees are going in a different direction at third.

Newsday | Erik Boland: Arenado’s future was not the only thing the third baseman discussed when speaking to reporters before the game. Arenado had nothing but praise for his friend and former teammate Paul Goldschmidt, tabbing the seven-time All-Star for a big season. He thinks Goldschmidt still has a lot in the tank and feels that his opposite field power could play up in Yankee Stadium. Most importantly, Arenado singled out the professionalism Goldschmidt brings to any clubhouse he’s in.

New York Daily News | Gary Phillips: Yankees top pitching prospect Will Warren has dominated across his first two spring appearances, tossing two scoreless with three strikeouts in relief against the Rays before logging three perfect innings with four strikeouts in his start against the Cardinals yesterday. Warren is seen as the Yankees’ most major league ready pitching prospect and he has certainly helped his cause with the command he has showcased so far this spring. He related that he is eager to turn the page on a rocky debut that saw him post a 10.32 ERA in six MLB appearances and has been picking the brains of Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, and Carlos Rodón on how to learn from each outing. Keep an eye out for a curveball he has reincorporated into his arsenal after scrapping it in 2023, the pitch expanding what is already a kitchen sink repertoire.

SNY | Phillip Martinez: Austin Wells wasn’t scheduled to make his spring debut until March, but he successfully lobbied Aaron Boone to play Wednesday, specifically for the chance to catch Warren. Wells went 1-for-2 with a double off the center field wall, and after the game was effusive in his praise for Warren. He lauded Warren’s aggressiveness in the zone and mentality he has brought to camp, Boone also relaying that Warren reminded him of Clarke Schmidt when it came to confidence in his abilities. Every spring there is player who turns heads — in 2023 it was Anthony Volpe and last year Luis Gil — and Warren has been the talk of camp so far.

YES Network: The Yankees have announced that 21 regular season games will be broadcast on the Amazon Prime Video streaming platform, with 18 of those games falling on Wednesday evenings. These games will come at no additional cost to Prime members in the Yankees home broadcast area of New York, Connecticut, north and central New Jersey, and northeast Pennsylvania. They have provided the full schedule for the season, the first game coming against the Diamondbacks on April 2nd.
