Beavers rally but fall to Auburn at College Baseball Classic

Oregon State rallied for four runs in the final two innings but couldn’t complete the comeback as the ninth-ranked Beavers lost 8-7 to Auburn on Saturday night at the College Baseball Classic in Arlington, Texas.

It was the third loss in four games for the Beavers (6-3), who got solo home runs in the early innings from Canon Reeder and Jacob Krieg as they jumped to a 3-2 lead in front of 5,433 at Globe Life Field.

But Auburn (10-1) generated runs across five consecutive innings to build an 8-3 lead by the end of the sixth.

It proved too much for Oregon State to overcome, even though the Beavers held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way.

Gavin Turley belted a two-run homer in the eighth and the Beavers scratched out two more runs in the ninth. But then the Tigers’ sixth pitcher of the night, Jett Johnston, struck out Tyce Peterson and got Turley to fly out to the warning track in center field to end the game.

Oregon State starter Dax Whitney (1-2) struck out six in 3 2/3 innings but also allowed four runs and took the loss.

Chris Rembert drove in four runs for Auburn, two of them coming on a home run in the fifth.

The Tigers’ Cam Tilly (2-0) picked up the win, with Johnston notching his first save of the season.

Next up: The Beavers close out the College Baseball Classic against Ohio State at 9 a.m. PT Sunday (streaming on Flo Baseball).
