A source familiar with the talks anonymously told the Associated Press that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is considering removing the Cincinnati native from the ineligible list, more than 35 years after he was placed there.

ESPN was the first to report on a petition to reinstate Rose, filed by his former lawyer Jeffrey Lenkov. The Southern California lawyer attended a December meeting with Rose’s daughter, Fawn, Commissioner Manfred, and an MLB executive in the Commissioner’s Office before filing that petition on Jan. 8.

Rose was permanently banned from Major League Baseball over gambling allegations in 1989. He applied for reinstatement numerous times over the years before his death back in September.

As recently as 2015, Manfred denied his application into the Baseball Hall of Fame. With the ban still in place, Rose cannot be inducted alongside other greats of the game.

The push to reinstate Rose and get him into the Hall of Fame got some serious backing this weekend.

President Donald Trump posted on social media on Friday night that he plans to issue “a complete PARDON of Pete Rose.” Trump posted on Truth Social that Rose “shouldn’t have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on HIS TEAM WINNING.”

Trump did not specifically mention Rose’s tax case in which Rose pleaded guilty in 1990 to two counts of filing false tax returns and served a five-month prison sentence.

The president said he would sign a pardon for Rose “over the next few weeks.”
