Vikings held a formal interview with top QB prospect at scouting combine

The Minnesota Vikings thoroughly evaluated last year’s rookie quarterback class. They ultimately drafted J.J. McCarthy with the 10th overall pick, and it appears they will be moving forward with him as their franchise quarterback. But that isn’t stopping them from checking in with one of this year’s top quarterback prospects.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Vikings interviewed Miami quarterback Cam Ward at last week’s scouting combine. Even Fowler admitted that the interview likely meant nothing. Ward is expected to be the first quarterback taken in this year’s draft, likely in the top five picks. The Vikings own the 24th pick, meaning Ward would either need to have a draft-night fall or they would have to trade up for him.

If anything, the interview gives Kevin O’Connell and the Vikings’ coaching staff some background on Ward, allowing them to familiarize themselves with him in the future if his services are available. After the Sam Darnold experiment worked out, the Vikings have a chance to help Daniel Jones get his career back on track.

Another successful quarterback renaissance, or McCarthy replicating Darnold’s 2024 season, could further cement the Vikings’ status as Quarterback U.
