Boston College baseball traveled to Virginia over the weekend and won two games, putting them at 4-4 on the season.
On Friday night, the Eagles battled back from a six-run deficit to beat William & Mary (4-5) 14-11. BC scored four runs in the first second, thanks to RBIs from Sam McNulty and Kyle Wolff and two wild pitches. But the Tribe erased that lead in the blink of an eye, plating six runs in their half of the second and chasing Eric Schroeder from the game.
The Tribe scored five runs over the next three innings and held an 11-5 lead after five frames. But the Eagles began to claw their way back into the contest in the sixth, scoring on a two-run single by Nick Wang. The seventh was another huge inning, as Birdball strung together a few hits and scored five runs. After run-scoring scoring singles by Wolff and Patrick Roche, Vince Cimini lashed a double to center that scored two more and gave the Eagles a 12-11 lead.
BC tacked on one run in both the eighth and the ninth, and Joey Ryan the final three innings, giving up no runs and picking up his second save of the season.
After Friday night’s comeback win, Saturday’s game against Richmond (8-2) was a bit of a letdown. BC pitching allowed at least one run in each of the first seven innings and the team lost 11-4. The Eagles used five pitchers and all of them gave up at least one run, with starter A.J. Colarusso going 2.2 innings and allowing four runs.
Luckily, Birdball ended the weekend on a high note, beating VCU 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. The pitching trio oof Tyler Mudd, Karl Meyer, and Cesar Gonzalez held the Rams to seven hits and just two earned runs. Mudd started the game and threw 5.1 innings, giving up two hits and one unearned run.
BC scored in the first inning on a two-run single by Wang. VCU also scored in the first, after a throwing error and an RBI double, but still trailed 2-1. The Eagles added to their lead in the fourth after Jace Roossien scored on an error. BC pitching held the VCU offense down until the seventh, when they tied the game at 3-3 with two singles.
Birdball snatched the lead back in the eight after Jack Toomey grounded into. double-play that allowed Adam Magpoc to score and give BC a 4-3 lead. Cesar Gonzalez pitched the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run and earned his second win of the season.
Patrick Roche and Josiah Ragsdale are now tied for the team lead in batting average with .333 and have a .935 and .929 OPS respectively. Kyle Wolff leads BC in RBI with nine and Nick Wang has a team-high 12 hits. However, the pitching staff’s stats are not as impressive. The Eagles’ three primary starters have a combined ERA of 7.57 over 28 innings.
BC will play two mid-week games in Virginia, against Longwood and Richmond, before they kick-off ACC play versus the No. 9 Virginia Cavaliers this weekend in Charlottesville.
