Mark Dantonio joining College Football Playoff Selection Committee

Mark Dantonio is coming out of a retirement again.

Sort of.

The winningest coach in Michigan State history on Tuesday was announced one of five new members of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. His three-year term will start this spring.

“I am very honored to be selected to the College Football Playoff committee,” Dantonio said in a press release. “It’s exciting to join an outstanding group of people dedicated to college football and I will look to bring a coach’s perspective to the process. I want to thank the CFP for this opportunity to help and serve the game that has given so much to me throughout my career.”

It’s the second time in less than two years Dantonio has taken a new job after abruptly retiring in February 2020. When former Michigan State coach Mel Tucker was suspended and ultimately fired in September 2023, Dantonio came out of retirement to serve as associate head coach under interim coach Harlon Barnett for the final 10 games of the season.

Dantonio spent 13 seasons leading the Spartans while compiling a record of 114-57 and winning a trio of Big Ten titles. The last came in 2015 as Michigan State made its debut in the CFP while losing to Alabama in a semifinal. Dantonio was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December.

The 13-member CFP Selection Committee is tasked with ranking the top 25 teams in the nation. Last season marked the first with the playoff expanding from four to 12 teams.
