While the College Football Playoff finally expanded to 12 teams during the 2024 season, there was already an uproar from fans and media about several different changes that need to be made in terms of how teams are seeded. Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer got to participate in the CFP back when it first started in 2014.
Recently, he shared his thoughts on the seeding of the 12-team College Football Playoff. And he explained why he believes it will be changed in 2025.
“Real quick as a former coach. I think it was fantastic, ” Meyer explained on Triple Option Podcast with Mark Ingram and Rob Stone. “I wish it was there when Mark [Ingram] and I were involved in the game. Our 2015 Buckeye team would have gotten in that darn thing. So, number one, it was a great success. Obviously, the seeding is, I don’t want to belabor it, but when you start seeing Boise and Arizona State [seeded above other teams]. Great year, great season, they did not earn that bye. I’ve already heard that’s not going to happen again.
“I’m real intrigued. When you say the entire, when you say the word college football, you don’t say academics anymore. You don’t say University. You don’t say rivalries. You don’t say networking after you’re done. Those are all topics of old.
Meyer then dropped the hammer on what’s driving all things college football.
“The new topic is money, money, money,” he said wrapping up. “And I’ve heard the SEC and the Big Ten carry a big stick. Which I know we’ll hit soon. But that’s gonna be the topic. You know? God bless the playoff. Everything was great about it. The seeding was not. And I’m sure that’s going to be changed.”
Arizona State was seeded No. 4 in the bracket, thanks to winning the Big 12 Championship. That put them ahead of the eventual national champion, the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Sun Devils got a bye in the first round, before falling to the Texas Longhorns, 39-31 in overtime in the quarterfinals.
Boise State and running back Ashton Jeanty got the No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff, where they were given a first-round bye. The top four overall seeds in the CFP were given first round byes. In the quarterfinals, the Broncos were throttled by No. 6 seed Penn State, 31-14. That one wasn’t really close. Plenty of college football fans out there wanted to see the procedure for seeing get fixed this offseason, and according to Meyer, that’s going to be changed.
